"National Center for Clinical Morphological Diagnostics" is a medical facility that carries out all types of cytological, histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunocytochemical, molecular (PCR, NGS) and other modern examinations of surgical and biopsy material.

NCCMD cooperates with more than 130 medical institutions, including 39 government organizations (some of them are federal or republican/regional level), more than 80 private medical facilities from 22 regions of the Russian Federation, from countries near and far abroad, with many network clinical laboratories.

NCCMD carries out practical and scientific research with educational medical institutions of St. Petersburg, including the University Clinic of St. Petersburg State University, The First Pavlov State Medical University of St. Petersburg, North-Western State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov, S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University, as well as with many others specialized medical facilities (oncological, rheumatological, nephrological, etc.).

NCCMD performs all types of modern morphological diagnostics and meets the requirements of the reference-level laboratory in following areas: endocrine pathology, nephropathology, gastrointestinal pathology, hepatopathology, oncohemopathology, oncology, cytopathology; has the relevant certificate of the Russian Society of Pathologists.

In NCCMD there are more than 70 employees, including 23 doctors, 4 of them are Doctors of Medicine, 4 are candidates of PhD, 6 employees have work experience or have interned in major morphological centers in Europe and the United States. The experience and qualifications of the medical and laboratory staff allow us to perform morphological studies at the level accepted in world practice efficiently and quickly. It is mandatory to use a system of internal and external quality control of the work performed. NCCMD has proven its competence at the international level and has certificate from Finnish External Quality Assessment platform LABSCALA, which is designed for medical laboratories and point-of-care testing sites to monitor and improve their performance.

NCCMD is equipped with modern special equipment and uses advanced technologies for processing biopsy and surgical material, unique modern techniques such as:

  • liquid-based cytology (gynecological, non-gynecological), PAP-test, immunocytochemical examinations and CINtec Plus Cytology Test;
  • FNA cytology of thyroid gland (30000-35000 cases per year) and surgical samples of thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands (5000 cases per year);
  • examination of cavity effusions with the preparation of cell blocks;
  • research of genetic damage in tumor tissues for the diagnosis and optimization of antitumor treatment (including targeted) for lung, breast, bladder, prostate cancer, metastatic melanoma, lymphoproliferative disorders.

The laboratory carries out specialized morphological examinations of renal biopsies (incl. transplanted):

  • light microscopy (hematoxylin and eosin stain, periodic acid–Schiff (PAS), Jones’ silver stain, Masson's trichrome stain, congo red (by indication) etc.
  • immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry (IgA, IgG, IgM, C1q, C3, fibrinogen, light chains kappa&lambda), immunohistochemical examinations AA-amyloid, IgG4, С4d, Polyoma-SV40, Parvo-B19, EBV, myoglobin;
  • electron microscopy (x1500 – 20000).

NCCMD carries out molecular genetic examinations using PCR-RT Technologies and Next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the materials of cell blocks and in tissue biopsies of tumors with certain mutations of the genes BRAF, RAS (K-, N-, H-), EGFR, ALK and others.

NCCMD takes part:

- in domestic and international scientific and practical conferences and congresses;

- in the development of standards and medical recommendations (protocols) as part of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation  working groups;

NCCMD cooperates:

- with medical institutions and doctors interested in modern and high-quality morphological diagnostics;

- for second opinion in morphological examination of surgical or biopsy material performed in other medical institutions, if it is necessary;

- with insurance companies that monitor patients with a "complex" or "unclear" diagnosis in order to make adequate medical decisions and optimize the use of financial resources;

- with scientific and practical medical facilities for conducting joint scientific, research, experimental, expert work.
